I am so far behind on my posts. So let me go back to a few days ago. I was on puppy watch, she had milk in all her teats, even the small ones in the front. That mean they should whelp very soon in my experience. I caught what I felt was the temperature drop, and they should start whelping 24 hours after that. Well three nights of hardly any sleep at all… and still not progressing into a delivery (whelping) of pups! This is so nerve wrecking as she was not pushing, not advancing into hard contractions or labor. Her temperature continued to drop and actually got down to 98.6 (I’ve never had one get to 98 as the books say) and the temp always goes back up to normal and not stay low.
Anyway… she was talking to me in paragraphs, complaining and was uncomfortable, but not in distress. .Just when she was nesting (tearing on an old blanket) and acting like she was going to advance into hard labor, she would stop and go to sleep. She never did have the mucous plug (stringers) or any fluid at all from her vulva. This is not normal. I felt something might be preventing her from progressing, i.e. twisted horn, or too distended and contractions are not possible. I once had a bitch with both many many years ago. She was doing the same exact thing and never progressed into labor.
SO… after waiting not so patiently (inside I was a mess, outside I was calm and reassuring to my girl Peony), I made the call to get a C-Section. This is a good call so one does not lose any pups.
