Peony with her seven newborn puppies!

Peotonio pups arrived all strong and nursing right away. These pups all range from 11 1/4 oz to 14 oz and are normal sized newborn pups. They are smaller than MoMo were, as Peony is having several more pups. She is the best first time Mama ever. Momo was whining a little bit in her pen wanting to come over and see the puppies and I said “shut up, Peony is having her pups”. She’s being quiet now. So incredibly proud of my girls.

Unfortunately we lost three pups after the 7th pup. She was not straining or in distress. Just resting. This is fine as long as the placenta stays attached so the pup is still getting oxygen. When it becomes detached too soon and the pup is not delivered immediately, the pup inhales the amniotic fluid inside their sac and are born stillborn. I did a couple digital exams while we were waiting to ensure a pup wasn’t in the birth canal (which need immediate attention), and there was not. We tried CPR for quite a while and I thought I was going to get the last one breathing, but it was too late. 🙁 She had a black boy, black boy and a black girl. RIP little ones. It is always a sucker punch to the gut when you lose a baby pup, let alone three. Sorry Leslie. I know she took it hard. Mother nature can be a real biotch sometimes. All three were stong, beautiful pups who were around 12 7/8 to 13 ounces each. No patches.
